Exploring Exostosis
What is Exostosis?
Exostosis, otherwise known as surfer’s ear, describes abnormal bony growth that is benign, in the bony portion of the ear canal. These new growths are a response from the ear to frequent and ongoing exposure to cold water or conditions such as wind. This condition is present in approximately 75% of surfers who are frequently exposed to cold water conditions, hence the nickname surfer’s ear.
Symptoms
Individuals with Exostosis may not have any symptoms initially, however over time depending on the growth and location of the exostoses, they may notice a fluctuating decrease in hearing, increased ear infections, difficulty removing debris or water from the ear canals, and a fluctuating blocked sensation.
Diagnosis
Typically, your GP or audiologist will be able to confirm the presence of exostoses through visual inspection. It is often recommended you have a full hearing test completed to assess whether the exostoses are impacting on your hearing. From here, an Ear Nose and Throat specialist can create a management plan for you.
Management
There are a few approaches to managing Exostosis that your specialist will advise you on. These include:
Watch and wait
- If the exostoses are not causing any pain, hearing loss or sufficient obstruction, keeping an eye on the condition is a common approach
Prevention
- Avoid exposure to cold water during extreme conditions (windy or freezing temperatures)
- Wearing a swim cap while swimming to help limit the amount of water in the ear canals
- Custom plugs for the ears
- Wearing a hooded top to protect the ears from cold wind
- Keep the ear canals warm and dry as much as possible
Surgery
- The exostoses may reach a stage where they become obtrusive and require removal
- The excess bony growths are often shaved down
