What is a Cholesteatoma?
A cholesteatoma is an abnormal skin growth or cyst behind the eardrum, in the middle ear space. It may be a birth defect, but it’s most commonly caused by repeated middle ear infections.
A cholesteatoma often develops as a cyst, or sac, that sheds layers of old skin. As these dead skin cells accumulate, the growth can increase in size and compromise the delicate bones of the middle ear. This may affect hearing, balance, and the function of facial muscles.
Common Symptoms
The symptoms associated with a cholesteatoma typically start out mild. They become more severe as the cyst grows larger and begins to cause problems within your ear.
Common symptoms include:
- Gradual hearing loss
- Recurring ear infections
- Discharge from the ear canal
- Tinnitus
Later stage symptoms can also include:
- Earache/pain
- Vertigo
- Facial weakness
What Causes a Cholesteatoma?
Cholesteatoma growth is often attributed to ongoing Eustachian tube dysfunction and recurrent middle ear infections which can either be acquired or congenital. Without proper treatment, a cholesteatoma can cause recurring ear infections, hearing loss, and impede on other structures in the head and neck areas.
Managing a Cholesteatoma
If you experience the symptoms of a cholesteatoma, it is important to be evaluated by an ear nose and throat specialist who can provide a definitive diagnosis using a variety of measures.
This can include:
- Visual inspection
- A hearing test
- Computerised topography (CT scan)
Cholesteatoma's can pose a threat to hearing, balance and facial nerve function. Treatment may include routine checkups with regular removal of excess skin and/or surgery to remove the cholesteatoma providing a safe and dry ear. Regular reviews are important as cholesteatoma's can return.
