What is Ear Wax?

What is Ear Wax?

Wax, otherwise known as cerumen, is naturally occurring and made by the cells inside the ear canal. Wax is designed to protect the ear from dust, foreign particles, and microorganisms, and keep the ear canal lubricated. It also protects the ear canal skin from irritation due to water. It is common for people to be concerned about wax in their ears. However, did you know that the ears are actually self-cleaning? In normal circumstances, excess wax finds its way out of the canal and into the ear opening naturally, and then is washed away.

Causes of Ear Wax Build Up

Typically, older earwax is moved through the ear canals by jaw movements such as chewing and talking, as new wax is produced. This movement will usually move the wax out of the ear canal without any poking or prodding required but in some cases, this process isn’t effective. For example, in people with narrow ear canals or with frequent earbud or headphone usage. Hence, wax can sometimes build up or be forced into regions of the ear canal where wax is not typically produced.

Symptoms of Ear Wax Build Up

Symptoms of built up wax can include:

  • Fullness/blockage of the ear
  • Pain in the ear (earache)
  • Muffled hearing
  • Tinnitus

Unremoved earwax build-up can lead to infection. Contact your doctor if you experience the symptoms of infection, such as:

  • Severe pain in your ear
  • Pain in your ear that doesn’t subside
  • Drainage from your ear
  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Persistent hearing loss
  • Odour coming from your ear
  • Dizziness

Ear Wax Removal

If you are not sure whether you have a build-up of wax, it is best to see your audiologist or GP who can look in your ear and let you know whether any removal is required, you should take great caution if ever trying to treat earwax buildup at home. Removal via pick or suction is the safest method. Treatment is generally quick and painless, and hearing can be fully restored.

Previous techniques included syringing, where a force of water is pushed through a syringe to force wax out of the canal. This method is no longer recommended as best clinical practice, as this can cause damage to the eardrum, cause or exacerbate tinnitus, induce vertigo or dizziness, or be trapped behind wax that isn’t pushed out and cause infection.

Hearing aid wearers are more prone to having ear wax build up, and for many of the audiological tests and procedures it is important to have ear canals free of wax. If you require wax to be removed, at Abi Hearing we offer safe and professional options for wax removal via suction or pick, quickly and painlessly.
